One of the concerns of many website owners is how to reduce page response time. An easy way is by optimizing images for sites to reduce their file size as much as possible. It not only makes web pages load faster, but also reduces bandwidth consumption, which can significantly lower your hosting bills.

Optimized web graphics provide multiple benefits such as:

  • Faster file and page loads which makes users’ browsing experience more enjoyable. This could lead to more visits to the website.
  • Less storage space on the server.
  • Less bandwidth is required to process the file.
  • Less storage and bandwidth needs, means hosting costs are significantly reduced.

There are several tools available for shrinking images. Some of them may include the following:

Smush it-it is a tool available as a simple web-based application, Firefox extension or a bookmarklet. It takes in most types of image formats and automatically converts GIFs to PNGs.

RIOT-riot is the short form for radical image optimization tool. It is available as a standalone application or as an extension of Irfanview. It takes in image formats such as JPG, PNG, and GIF. The tool also has basic image-editing utilities such as pan, zoom, and rotate and flip that have been built in.

PINGOUT-it is a popular and free tool for optimization of your images. It can run in the command-line or windows run dialog box. It accepts image formats such as JPG, GIF, and PNG.

ONLINE IMAGE OPTIMIZER- you can either upload the photo directly from your machine or provide a link to the image you wish to optimize. You can also select what output you would like the optimized image to be. The only limitation of this tool is that it only accepts images less than 300 KB.

The above information really comes in handy when optimizing images for sites.
